Lab Technician II - Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences

Position Description:

Purpose

Under direct supervision, support research personnel by assisting in routine laboratory experiments. Provide assistance with maintenance, operation, organization and inventory of laboratory equipment.

Primary Functions

  •   Feed zebrafish and maintain fish facility.

  •   Maintain records of water quality and other safety measures.

  •   Assist in carrying out basic lab techniques such as fin clipping and PCR.

  •   Make and supply media and buffers to research areas as needed.

  •   Operate and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment.

  •   Organize and set-up laboratory supplies and equipment for individual research investigators.

  •   Maintain inventory and record of supplies.

  •   Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.

Preferred Schedule:
Part-time position to cover weekends and holidays; a possibility of additional hours during regular workdays (M-F) is also available.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

Understanding of general laboratory procedures. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to use independent judgment.

Specifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education:               High School Diploma

Minimum Required Experience:              1 year
