The Cliffe Lab at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, investigates the molecular mechanisms of herpes simplex virus latency in neurons. We are seeking a Laboratory Technician level 2 to work on projects investigating Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection in neurons. The lab technician will work closely with the PI to use virology, molecular biology and cell biology techniques to HSV reactivation from latency. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, propagating and titrating virus stocks, routine tissue culture and general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-PCR). The lab technician will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes training of other personnel, maintaining mouse colonies (although this is flexible), ordering supplies, preparing stock solutions, organizing and maintaining virus stocks and assisting the PI with environmental health and safety compliance. 

Requirements:

The successful candidate must have a B.S. degree in biology, or a related field, and at least one year of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Virology and/or Molecular Biology, and experience with tissue culture techniques.”
 

Responsibilities include:

  • The incumbent will attend weekly meetings with the Principal Investigator to discuss experimental results, conducts literature searches, and presents results in lab meetings.
  • The incumbent works under supervision, independently and ethically, documents all research data appropriately, and assists other members of the lab.
  • Assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
  • May perform small animal surgery.
  • Assist in training other staff members on procedures.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

This position also includes support activities such as maintenance of cell lines and preparation of reagents for the laboratory, management of safety training and records, and the training of undergraduate and graduate researchers."
