The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is currently seeking a Lab and Research Technician 2 to participate in studies of vascular abnormalities in cardiovascular disorders.

This position provides technical support to a basic science research laboratory consisting of research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory duties including maintenance of mouse colonies (genotyping, husbandry, database management), the inventory of lab supplies, maintenance of lab equipment, and making common laboratory solutions. The lab tech will work closely with the PI and other lab members to learn and perform a variety of experimental procedures including but not limited to histology, pulmonary pressure measurements, and confocal microscopy to examine the vascular abnormalities.

Desired candidates should have experience in the following areas: general biological procedures and techniques; animal procedures; general computer skills; work both independently and with others in a highly collaborative team-based environment; attention to detail; strong communication skills, ability to assist in protocol and SOP development, ACUC, IRB, EH&S and other local, federal or sponsor-driven regulations and policies is desirable.

The specific responsibilities of the position include: designing and optimizing laboratory procedures; conducting experiments; recording and analyzing results; presenting data, providing training on laboratory techniques; manage common lab space and resources; serve as lab contact person for the different university offices (CVRC, safety, etc.) and sales representatives; preparation of ACUC and IRB protocol  and MTA applications, etc.

The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges. Preference will be given to those with animal research experience.

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience.  A bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
