Job Summary | The Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences has an opportunity for a Lab Specialist. The position is dynamic in that it involves working with multiple investigators and projects in various locations on campus. The lab specialist will be responsible for key laboratory functions involving animals, collecting and processing specimens, and organization and analysis of data. The ideal candidate will have experience with a variety of molecular biology and histological techniques, excel in an independent work environment, and have strong attention to detail. Working with laboratory animals is a requirement of the position, but previous experience isn’t necessary. |
Responsibilities | 1) Confers with the Principal Investigator and senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed. 2) Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment. 3) Assist with routine care of research animals. 4) Assist with minor animal surgery and collection of animal tissues for laboratory analysis. 5) Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials. 6) Manages and analyzes experimental data and prepares reports summarizing research results. 7) Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research. Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required: Nearly Continuously: Office environment. Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals). Seldom: Exposure to animals. Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. |
Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency; two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.
