Job Summary | Performs advanced laboratory techniques and procedures in HCI Biorepository Molecular Diagnostics Section in a collaborative research laboratory setting. Supports daily operations of the laboratory and its personnel. The primary daily role includes isolating and quantifying nucleic acid from consented patient specimens for research purposes, in accordance with the cores College of American Pathologists (CAP) Accreditation. Other roles will seek to further the cores mission of enabling clinical, translational, and basic science research by providing cutting-edge genetic analysis of consented patient specimens and research samples. Platforms used in the core include NanoString nCounter and GeoMx, BioRad QX200 Droplet Digital PCR. |
Responsibilities | Responsibilities: · Performs nucleic acid extractions from consented patient specimens, quantifies the quantity and quality of the extractions, and prepares reports for the requester detailing these results. · Prepare and process samples to be run on the platforms offered by the core, NanoString nCounter, and GeoMx and BioRad QX200 Droplet Digital PCR. · Assist the core director in the design, implementation, and performance of new protocols and procedures, as well as the modification of existing techniques. · Reviews scientific literature for information concerning experimental procedures. · Maintains accurate and detailed experimental records and maintains standard operating procedures and quality control records for laboratory reagents. · May supervise, train and review the work of laboratory personnel. · Problem Solving Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to hiring individuals whose merit and experience promote a diverse, inclusive, anti-racist workforce and culture. Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required: Nearly Continuously: Office environment. Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals). Seldom: Exposure to animals. Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. |
Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency; two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.
