Job Summary
The ADD program is a contract site funded through NINDS dedicated to testing drugs to treat epilepsy. Employees perform technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. The Lab Specialist position can include; calculating, formulating and administering investigational compounds, performing experiments using rodent models, recording observations, collecting samples, performing surgeries and generating reports. This position is also responsible for ordering supplies and equipment needed and maintaining a clean lab space. 
Responsibilities
Responsibilities and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline or equivalency required; with a minimum of 4yrs. Experience. Knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Experience in handling mice and rats, dosing calculations, administering drugs, collecting samples, and using laboratory equipment preferred. Ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
 
OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification required.

Problem Solving

Must be adept at identifying and resolving problems that arise during experiments or tests. Whether it’s a malfunctioning piece of equipment, an unexpected result, must be able to troubleshoot effectively to maintain the integrity of their work.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).
Seldom: Exposure to animals.
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required
Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.
Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.
