Overview

The Office of the Vice Provost of Research (OVPR) provides the key services necessary to deliver exceptional results in research.

 

The Laboratory Safety (LS) Group supports research and teaching activities by providing training, advice and other compliance assistance in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety, general lab safety


What You'll Do

The Laboratory Safety Support Officer (LSSO) is the first-line contact for providing expert advice or technical services for general matters within the disciplines of public health, occupational safety and health, fire safety and environmental protection for the faculty, staff, students,visitors, contractors and regulatory agents performing work in or impacting teaching, education and training laboratories.

 

As a generalist, the LSSO can provide direct support and/or collaborate with the Lab Safety Specialists on staff in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety and radiation safety.


 
Responsibilities include:
  • Performs regular laboratory audits and provide recommendations and education to researchers and instructors as needed to maintain safety and compliance
  • Ensures inspection reports, citations, and resolutions are documented and presented to the appropriate Supervisor(s) and Committee, as necessary
  • Presents laboratory safety trainings
  • Assists with risk assessments for laboratory tasks
  • Participates in the planning and coordination of lab closures, openings, renovations and relocations 
  • Fields general questions, concerns, and inquiries from lab staff and provide feedback
  • Assists with the management and disposal of hazardous waste (bio-med including sharps, chemical,
    controlled substances) generated in labs
  • Provides guidance and education on hazardous waste regulations and policy, inspecting to confirm compliance, and managing vendors for waste pick-up and supply delivery to and from labs
  • Performs autoclave validations and assures appropriate recordkeeping

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements

  • Knowledge and skills typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, one of the life sciences, or related discipline
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a laboratory or related industry (chemical manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, research laboratory, etc.). Experience in Chemical Hygiene/lab safety strongly preferred
  • Must be committed to working as a member of a team
  • Must be familiar with standard laboratory procedures and operations in order to converse with researchers and provide relevant guidance
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office and standard office software
  • Ability to travel between campuses

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Chemical Hygiene/lab safety
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or other recognized health and safety certification
  • Progress towards certification or advance degree in a relevant discipline will be considered
  • Capable of obtaining medical clearances for using respiratory protection
  • 1-3+ years bench experience
  • Strong presentation and technical training skills
  • Valid driver’s license

Pay Range
Minimum $68,400.00, Midpoint $85,550.00, Maximum $102,700.00
 
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
