Lab Research Technician
Microbiology/Immunology, Tulane Medical Center
Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
A Laboratory Research Technician for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is immediately available within a research team involved in immunology and fungal pathogenesis. This individual will primarily be responsible for (1) organizing and performing animal research studies (including mouse breeding, infections, immunizations, and sample collection), (2) performing benchtop immunologic assays (including ELISA assays, western blots, flow cytometry, multiplex assays, and tissue culture work), (3) fungal and bacterial culture, enumeration, inoculation, and manipulation (including DNA isolation, PCR, cloning, and agarose and SDS-PAGE gels), and (4) assisting with daily laboratory operations including ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies and safety paperwork. This work will require teamwork and coordination with other lab members, maintenance of accurate and timely records of experimental procedures and results, and maintenance of supply inventories for the laboratory. There are opportunities for independent research, writing manuscripts, and publication and presentation of research findings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with the principles of biology (preferably microbiology & immunology).
  • Experience with standard laboratory techniques.
  • Solid analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient laboratory record keeping and maintenance skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work in solo and team environments and multitask during the workday.

Required Education and/or Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree and one year of basic laboratory research experience
OR
2. High school diploma/equivalent and 5 years’ experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science.
  • Experience in mouse handling and breeding.
  • Experience in laboratory techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture, and molecular biology are desirable.
  • Experience in aseptic techniques and culture and maintenance of microbial stocks.
  • Experience in statistical analysis. 

Compensation Information
This position is classified as "non-exempt, hourly" and is assigned to pay grade 23.
