Lab Research Technician
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
The position is of a lab manager and research assistant who will support the laboratory research requirements on several projects and manage lab protocols, inventory, and basic administrative duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Driving long distances to conduct field research of collecting butterflies and plants.
  • Background in molecular lab work such as tissue collection, DNA extraction, PCR amplification.
  • Comfortable with running laboratory protocols.
  • Some knowledge of excel, word, google documents to manage lab protocols and documents.

SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:
Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.
 REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:
Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
Required Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelors of Science with a major in Biology/Cell & Molecular Biology/ Evolutionary Biology
  • Experience in field research, molecular lab techniques such as DNA extractions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Has a valid drivers license to conduct field work in USA.
  • Has a background in doing next-generation library preparation and sequencing.
  • Has experience participating in large plant grow out experiments or insect breeding experiments.
  • Masters of Science with a major in Biology/Cell & Molecular Biology/ Evolutionary Biology

Compensation Information
This position is classified as "non-exempt, hourly" and is assigned to pay grade 23.
