The Duke Microbiome Core is part of a vibrant community of researchers and supports labs at Duke and beyond by providing services for processing and analysis of a wide range of microbiome samples from humans, other organisms and the environment. We are currently seeking a Laboratory Research Analyst II to join our highly collaborative team.

Job duties for this position include the following:

Project coordination

Work with Core Director to meet investigators and provide consultations on planning and carrying out Microbiome studies. Coordinate and supervise lab tasks related to Microbiome projects in the core, adhering to established protocols and maintaining well-documented record of work performed.

Sample management and processing                

Oversee sample submissions and interact with Core users to provide consultations on appropriate protocols and analysis strategies. Perform DNA extractions and NGS library prep for Microbiome samples, including development of new protocols as necessary.

Technology development                         

Work with Core Director and Duke Microbiome research community to research and pilot new technologies and experimental strategies as potential new services for the Core. Develop and test new Microbiome SOPs as needed.

Data analysis                                  

Provide consultation and support for established Microbiome analysis pipelines. Work with Duke Microbiome Center leadership and user groups to develop and implement new pipelines for current and future Microbiome analysis platforms.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Expertise in next-generation sequencing platforms and familiarity with existing computational tools for analysis of NGS data is required. Candidates with knowledge of current analysis packages and standard statistical methods for Microbiome analysis are highly preferred.


Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.


Experience

Work requires four years of research experience. A related master's OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
