Lab Research Analyst I

Haynes Lab – Duke Human Vaccine Institute

Responsibilities :

  • Perform vaccine research in Dr. Bart Haynes’ Laboratory of B-Cell Immunology, focusing on in-vitro antibody binding assays.
  • Conduct antibody studies of human and animal specimens and recombinant systems utilizing ELISA, Luminex, SDS PAGE and Western blotting.
  • Maintain various cell lines in culture for protein expression, including IgG production/purification and mRNA/DNA transfections as needed.
  • Design, execute, analyze and archive experiments in a manner that is scientifically justifiable, reliable and understandable to others.
  • Help pilot and optimize new laboratory techniques as needed.
  • Train and provide guidance to less experienced laboratory staff and students as needed.
  • Ensure SOP’s are understood and followed regarding lab experiments, equipment and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with staff, your supervisor, and primary investigator (Dr. Haynes) to review experimental results and develop new research plans.
  • Understand and comply with all safety standards and procedures to insure a safe working environment for all laboratory staff.
  • Maintain physical and electronic reagent and specimen databases in accurate and orderly state.
  • Maintain laboratory compliance by ensuring that key equipment and laboratory spaces are properly maintained, stocked and organized.
  • Be on the Minus80 call tree and ready to respond with 24/7 freezer monitoring/rescue issues.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Principal Investigator or senior lab staff.

Required Qualifications at this Level :

  • Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
  • Experience: Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

  • Proficient in related laboratory techniques with technical precision.
  • Able to manage multiple and rapidly changing priorities and quickly learn new skills.
  • Detail-oriented and well organized with strong communication skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced interactive team environment.
