Cell Culture Specialist, Life Science Facility (Laboratory Research Analyst I)

Occupational Summary:

The Life Science Facility is an institutional core facility within the Department of Integrative Immunobiology within the Duke University School of Medicine, and provides laboratory reagents, supplies, oligonucleotides, and cell culture services to researchers throughout the Duke research community. The Cell Culture Specialist is responsible for all day-to-day operations regarding the cell culture service branch of the Life Science Facility.

Work Performed:

  • Responsible for all daily operations for the Life Science Facility’s Cell Services laboratory.
  • Responsible for maintaining all cell line stocks, which includes, but not limited to, monitoring liquid nitrogen storage tanks, passaging cell lines and other cell culture techniques, preparing cell line samples for testing, and ensuring adequate amount of stock vials available to researchers.
  • Prepare all standard cell line products requested by researchers, such as frozen cell line vials or live cell culture flasks. Perform cell counting by using specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinate with researchers to fulfill any cell culture special project orders, by planning, designing, and executing the agreed upon cell culture project. Prepare detailed reports on the completed work.
  • Manage the cell culture procedures through established protocols. Review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to stay current on new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of new or updated cell culture procedures and techniques for the facility.
  • Perform all required billing steps for all cell culture services purchases. Confer with Director in determining any necessary changes to billing or budgeting for cell culture services.
  • Develop and maintain good customer service relationships with members of the Duke research community. Train other researchers or facility personnel on any current or new techniques and procedures, if necessary.
  • Manage the laboratory space by maintaining proper inventory levels and keeping clean and orderly conditions within the laboratory.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level:

  • Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology, or other directly related scientific field.
  • Experience: Work requires two years of research experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Skills:
    • Demonstrated experience in mammalian cell culture.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work independently, use good judgment, and complete multiple projects at once.
