Position Focus:

This role reports to the Vice Chair of Research and the Administrative Manager, focusing on the seamless operation of the Ophthalmology Research Lab by leveraging managerial expertise and proficiency in safety protocols. Duties encompass overseeing laboratory equipment, procurement of supplies, and data analysis tools, including inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Additionally, conducting and documenting advanced quality assurance and preventive maintenance is integral. Serving as the primary liaison for equipment matters, coordinating maintenance with vendors, and managing scheduling for lab and equipment usage are key responsibilities. Ensuring adherence to industry standards and safety protocols in specimen handling and disposal is paramount.

Dually, this role will provide support for the Core Grant, necessitating a highly motivated individual capable of engaging with investigators within Yale's vision research community. Responsibilities entail the design and production of genetic tools for pioneering neuroscience research, involving DNA manipulation and optimization of viral technologies, notably Adeno-associated virus (AAV), with a strong focus on upholding rigorous quality control standards. The ideal candidate will collaborate with laboratory researchers across various groups and feel confident in overseeing laboratory staff. There will also be opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge projects in visual neuroscience research. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience in cell culture and computational analysis of genetic data.


Essential Duties

1. Supervises the day-to-day activities of support staff. 2. Assesses and resolves or escalates problems arising within unit. 3. Assists in the development of policies and procedures in support of unit. 4. Assists in planning for work unit needs. 5. Participates in unit budget planning. 6. Evaluates work requests to determine if they are appropriate to the unit or another area. 7. Ensures that work flow is organized and staffed for quality efficient completion. 8. Communicates deadlines and special circumstances to staff. 9. Maintains equipment and supplies for unit. 10. Completes evaluations of direct report employees. 11. Interacts with University personnel to define work assignments and requirements and communicate progress of work. 12. Interacts with external sources to coordinate work necessary to fulfill projects, keep abreast of new products and technologies, or arrange for subcontractors. 13. Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 14. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Project management skills, including the ability to track and manage inventory.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to establish quality standards to maintain laboratory equipment performance, including training on usage of equipment.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proven experience with lab equipment and troubleshooting methods.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proven experience in a laboratory setting.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Proven experience with cell culture and computational analysis of genetic data. Ability to facilitate interactions between faculty labs and University organizations. Research and collect data through complex scientific experiments, techniques and procedures, perform library research and structured interviews with scientific staff, and assist in data interpretation and analyses.
