Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Geography & Environment brings a unique perspective to the study of some of our world’s most pressing issues. Geographers bring together physical science, social science, and the humanities to study patterns and processes across the earth’s surface. From analyzing regional dynamics of climate change to investigating new global structures of work and labor, Carolina faculty and students conduct cutting-edge research at one of the top Geography departments in the country.
Position Summary
This position will support the Carbonshed Laboratory, located within the Department of Geography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The primary purpose of this position is to provide personnel and research management to a physical science laboratory on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. This position will work with the supervisor and independently to coordinate workflow, supervise other lab personnel, including undergraduate and graduate students, and operate specific laboratory equipment and instruments. The Laboratory Manager will act as the laboratory safety manager, implementing and maintaining all necessary safety documentation, ensuring all lab participants have undertaken proper training, and maintaining safety records. The Manager will be responsible for ordering the necessary materials and supplies. The Laboratory Manager is expected to carry out laboratory procedures and recommend improvements/changes to any processes to supervisor. The Manager will be expected to assist with writing funding proposals, ensuring the goals of current research grants are being met.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
B.S. or B.A. in Geography or similar science. Prior experience working in a physical science lab.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preferred experience in surface hydrology methods, watershed studies, GIS, data analysis, and working and troubleshooting lab and field equipment. Examples of equipment and techniques include pressure transducers, dataloggers, water quality sensors, portable cavity ring down spectrometer for CO2 and CH4, portable infrared gas analyzers, submersible ultraviolet nitrate analyzers, UV sensors, acoustic velocity meters, gas chromatography, and dissolved organic carbon analysis.
