One of the first departments founded at the University of Chicago was the Department of Chemistry. Since then, The University of Chicago has been the recipient of more than 73 Nobel Prize recipients, 15 of which came from the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty have considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science.


Job Summary
 

Krishnan Laboratory is at the forefront of applying DNA nanotechnology for targeting small molecules specifically to diseased cells with organelle-level precision. Currently, our lab is developing high-accuracy, DNA-based probes for diagnostic applications that target nucleic acid-loaded exosomes in circulation. We are currently looking for a highly motivated, experienced Lab Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of the Krishnan lab.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee laboratory safety protocols to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations including chemical safety hygiene, radiation safety, and radioactivity permit applications/renewal.

  • Work with lab members and center faculty manager to optimize laboratory space usage.

  • Assist in the grant report preparation and submission.

  • Prepare and maintain collaborative materials, and data transfer agreements across different institutions.

  • Submit published data to public archives for compliance with Federal Funding rules.

  • Oversee the equipment acquisition process, including helping decide instrument specifications, obtain quotes, negotiate pricing, and write equipment justification statements.

  • Purchase and manage lab supply inventory.

  • Act as a liaison between service engineers and researchers for scheduling repair and preventative maintenance services.

  • Work closely with PI and researchers to identify short and long-term laboratory needs.

  • Negotiate equipment service contracts.

  • Work with department personnel on HR matters related to the onboarding, including visa requests and extensions for all international scholars.

  • Organize weekly laboratory meetings.

  • Arrange travel logistics for PI-s, lab members, and visiting scientists.

  • Maintain lab website and manage lab data archive database.

  • Work with department personnel to ensure graduate students are on track with their program requirements.

  • Establish lab social activities to promote a positive and collaborative work environment.

  • Organize equipment demos and special training sections for members when needed.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Works independently to assist with project design.

  • Solves complex problems relating to the administration of projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:         

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Biology/Cell Biology/Biochemistry/Molecular Biology or related fields.

Experience:       

  • Five years of research experience in Cell Biology/Fluorescence Microscopy/Advanced Imaging/Molecular Biology or related fields.

  • Experience as a lab manager/administrator.

Preferred Competencies

  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research setting.

  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Organizational skills.

  • Verbal and written communication skills.
