Brief Position Overview
A full-time position has become available managing the laboratory complexes and long-term animal and rangeland production datasets associated with the Department of Animal & Range Sciences. This includes student training and ensuring the shared laboratories in the Animal Biosciences Building (ABB) and the Oscar Thomas Nutrition Center remain in compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations, and managing long-term production and research data being generated at its three research centers, BART, Ft. Ellis, and Red Bluff. Research activities within the Department of Animal & Range Sciences, include: Cell Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Physiology, and Nutrition. The successful applicant will work with faculty and students and be an active participant in the department’s research, teaching, and extension team.

Position Details


General Statement
The mission of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences is to evaluate and communicate science-based knowledge to enhance the management of Montana’s livestock and rangeland resources in ways that are economically, socially and ecologically sustainable.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Managing the laboratories and associated facilities;
  • Ensuring safety and compliance of laboratory employees and students;
  • Conducting and/or overseeing analytical procedures;
  • Managing long-term production and research datasets;
  • Contributing to ongoing research and data analyses.
  • Maintaining inventories of chemicals and supplies;
  • Ensuring research equipment is maintained;
  • Managing laboratory budgets;
  • Developing and teaching laboratory procedures and analytical operations to technical staff, undergraduate, and graduate students.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor of Science in a biological/chemical sciences or closely related field.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in management and processing of data, including using spreadsheet and/or database software.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory analytical techniques including collecting, organizing, and recording data.
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, both expenditures and income.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Advanced degree in a biological/chemical sciences or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory program development and oversight.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing research projects including maintaining equipment, purchasing supplies, following appropriate safety procedures, and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use and maintenance of established and new laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrated molecular biology experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in basic information technology, i.e., installation, maintenance, and implementation of computer systems and applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management and training.
