Job Overview

This position is responsible for helping run the experimental and administrative requirements of an 8-10-person research laboratory.  They will perform a diverse array of molecular biology, biochemical and mouse genetics experimental research. They will also provide the general daily, weekly, monthly lab management required to keep an 8-10-person research laboratory running efficiently.  The selected individual will work directly with the recently hired Principal Investigator to establish  and  efficiently run this biomedical research lab.  Individual hired will need to be able to function independently to manage daily affairs of the research laboratory design and perform routine and complex laboratory research experiments.  Will receive instruction and mentorship from the Principal Investigator, Dr. Slingerland.

Work Interactions

The role of Lab Manager will be essential to the generation of data and running of the lab, which will affect the productivity of federally funded research projects in the Lab and the ability to acquire further external funding for the lab and GUMC as a whole.  The candidate will be involved in a number of projects and will be integral for the everyday running of the lab by completing a host of tasks and responsibilities, and report directly to the PI of the lab.

Lab Manager/ Research Specialist 2 to be recruited to the  Slingerland laboratory for research in cell cycle regulation and PI3K signaling, to investigate novel pro-oncogenic roles of p27 in transcriptional regulation and epigenetics. Other projects pursue how estrogen receptor and NFKB pathways interact to link estrogens, obesity, inflammation, and breast cancer stem cells. Projects require discretion and judgment in research activities within project scope and methodologies. This position requires in-depth knowledge of molecular biology, protocol/ method development, organizing and implementing complex research plans, analysis of data, and writing manuscripts for publication of findings. The Lab Manager will work with the Principle Investigator to conduct research and also serve as lab manager in organizing purchase of reagents and supplies. He/she will assist with training junior lab members in routine protocols and assisting in all organizational aspects of the laboratory per Georgetown University policies and procedures.

Compliance Management

Will prepare and maintain  IACUC protocols and assure lab compliance with these. Will maintain chemical and hazardous agent inventory and assure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety requirements for management of the laboratory.  

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and/or related field.

  • Previous experience as part of a research team in an academic setting (3-10 years preferred).

  • Previous experience in basic molecular biology, mammalian cell culture (3-10 years preferred).

  • Previous experience with mouse husbandry and genetics (3-10 years preferred).

  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and acquire new skills when needed.

  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required.

Candidates must possess: 1) broad knowledge of cancer research and experience in human cell/tissue culture, molecular biological techniques, experience with animal models; prior experience in epigenetics/bioinformatics is desirable but not required. 2) ability to plan, organize and meet deadlines is required. 3) must be highly motivated and detail oriented. 4) excellent communication skills (verbal and written), and ability to collaborate with others. 5) ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously and independently. 6) demonstrate problem solving skills.
