Lab Manager, Department of Dermatology

​The Department of Dermatology at the University of Virginia is seeking candidates for the Laboratory Manager.

The Department of Dermatology recently hired Dr. Lu Q. Le as the new Chair of Dermatology.  Dr. Le’s research focuses on neural-crest derived tissue development, regeneration, homeostasis, and tumorigenesis, in particular, the biology of neurofibromatosis, a group of genetic disorders that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue.

The Laboratory Manager will have oversight of many aspects of the lab environment: They are responsible for keeping laboratory operations running smoothly, including ordering reagents and materials required to carry out experiments, making sure regulatory compliance is maintained, keeping the lab well-stocked, organized, and clean, and implementation of lab policies. In addition to managing laboratory operations, the Laboratory Manager will order mice and assist with mouse colony maintenance.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Ordering lab reagents and supplies, and making sure all equipment is in good working condition.

  • Ensure that lab personnel maintains current knowledge of lab techniques, procedures, and equipment operation.

  • Ensure that lab staff are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures and equipment specific requirements. Advise on technical procedures, techniques, and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.

  • Keep new employees abreast of current standards and changes. Potentially train new personnel on equipment use/ protocols.

  • Order mice and assist with mouse colony maintenance.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's degree. Bachelor's degree accepted with additional experience.

  • Experience: Master's degree: Four years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role. Bachelor's Degree: Six years of experience in lab technical and/or supervisory role.

  • Licensure: Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred.  Certain areas may require certification to be obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

This position will remain open until filled.  The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.  A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.
