The Lab Manager is responsible for all CECS laboratory safety, cleanliness, organization, environmental compliance, and adequate and appropriate equipment selection and upkeep. The position is responsible for ensuring all faculty, students, and any additional entities that may be involved with the labs such as suppliers, industry partners, etc., abide by appropriate laboratory policies and procedures. The Lab Manager works closely with college personnel as well as personnel across campus; directs college lab supervisor(s), shop manager(s), and technician(s). The position requires a broad scope of manufacturing, engineering, electrical, mechanical, construction, and safety experience to ensure all aspects of the laboratories are run smoothly. This position demands someone with technical knowledge, but also excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially in conflict resolution, communicating needs, and understanding timelines and limitations.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensures all laboratories are compliant with university, state, and federal regulatory requirements; maintains a safe, clean, and quality operating environment in all laboratories; acts as the overall college lab safety coordinator and completes an annual inventory of laboratory chemicals, equipment, and materials/supplies.

  • As the manager of a team, administrative duties such as purchasing, task delegation, performance reviews, work schedules and various other duties are expected.
  • Coordinate with departments to verify infrastructure for equipment exists or can be adapted for the equipment requirements.
  • Supervision of rigging/handling the moving, shipping, and receiving of sensitive laboratory equipment.
  • Understanding of construction and manufacturing is a must in order to coordinate with other areas of the university to see projects to completion.
  • Ability to troubleshoot advanced experiments and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance and set a positive example by practicing safety and personally using all appropriate safety equipment.
  • Establish and require neat and safe work practices as normal procedure.
  • Ensure activities conducted within scope of responsibility comply with related and relevant University policies.
  • Ensure all who work in lab spaces are provided sufficient information, training, and supervision to conduct safe work.
  • Ensure all lab personnel are equipped with the required personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure PPEs are properly maintained and correctly used.
  • In coordination with the University Public Safety Office, ensure all college personnel receive appropriate and adequate information and training to respond to emergency situations.
  • Ensure all relevant safety-related manuals and forms are available, updated, properly stored and easily accessible to anyone for consultation.
  • Ensure that safety devices and engineering controls are adequate, appropriate and in good working order.
  • Ensure required instrument (safety cabinets, hood, freezers, incubators, etc.) monitoring is routinely performed and displayed.
  • Maintain updated Safety Data Sheets (SDS) information that are easily accessible for all who work in lab spaces as well as University Public Safety officers and Facilities personnel.
  • Understand and act on appropriate chemical-handling procedures, including shipping and receiving. Comply with required international chemical labeling and storage standards.
  • Report in a timely fashion any risk that needs to be addressed to the University Public Safety Office.
  • Prepares periodic reports, forms, surveys, or other tools that reiterate the goals and accomplishments of assigned programs.
  • Utilizes various media forms to communicate safe work practices/hazards mitigation.
  • Researches products, technologies, tools and resources, services, procedures, etc. takes action on recalls/safety hazards.
  • Actively monitors laboratory safety/compliance of research, diagnostic and teaching laboratories, research-related workshops, and other spaces through annual program audits (inspections).
  • Documents and communicates findings and tracks corrective actions to resolution/closure in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinates inspection schedule assignments with research investigators, lab management staff, departmental safety coordinators, or academic department heads.
  • Keep all appropriate personnel updated on laboratory safety issues.
  • Perform assessments on safety complaints/concerns, non-compliances, and laboratory incidents; provide recommended corrective actions and lessons learned.


  • The ideal candidate will possess the following:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • General computer skills and competency in using MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
    • Experience working with chemical, electrical and/or mechanical hazards.
    • High level of dependability and integrity.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Ability to work occasional nights/weekends/emergency situations.
    • Valid driver's license
    • Ability to wear the required personal protective equipment to include a respirator, if needed.

    Minimum Qualifications: Engineering-related BS and 5 years of experience creating and delivering laboratory safety (e.g. chemical hygiene, biosafety), laboratory risk management, chemical/waste shipping, and regulatory compliance training programs; experience supervising, working or overseeing safety program implementation within a research and/or teaching lab; BSL-2 or BSL-3 lab; engineering, radiological or applied science lab.
