About the Department
North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinary scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.
Essential Job Duties
The selected applicant will fill the role of lab coordinator for two labs, the Sheahan lab and Battle lab, to be split 50/50 effort. Laboratory management is an essential aspect of this job, including organizing the lab(s), maintaining inventory, and managing safety protocols for the lab(s).
The Sheahan lab studies gastrointestinal disease in horses with a focus on colitis (inflammation of the colon), colic, and gastric ulcers. The long-term goal is to develop novel diagnostics or therapeutics for horses with gastrointestinal disease. Research duties will include primary cell cultures (intestinal organoids) and molecular techniques (qRT-PCR, immunofluorescence, western blot). Optional opportunities exist for limited live animal (horse) interaction during clinical research projects.
The Battle lab examines digestive diseases through a developmental biology lens. Using cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology tools in the context of animal and organoid model systems, they seek to delineate fundamental mechanisms of gastrointestinal development and disease. The long-term goal is to apply the knowledge gained to gastrointestinal diseases, including short bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, metaplasia, such as Barrett’s esophagus and cancer, to generate new therapeutic drugs and engineered tissues for transplantation. Research duties will include performing molecular biology and histology techniques with mouse and human cells as well as with mouse and human tissues, providing support in managing the lab’s mouse colony (basic husbandry tasks, genotyping, and collection of tissue for downstream analyses), maintaining cell lines, including pluripotent stem cells, primary cells, 3D organoid cultures, and established cell lines from mouse, rat, or human origin, oversight of ordering and maintaining the supply of inventories.
Small independent projects and collaborations are encouraged if desired by the candidate, as well as mentorship of undergraduate students, veterinary students, and residents in the laboratory setting. The two labs are situated adjacent to each other in the same shared lab space, facilitating the shared duties of this position.
