Department Description

The Chemistry Department is a large and complex academic and research department located in the College of Letters and Science. The department has state and extramural funds with expenditures of approximately $28M annually including $8M in organized research. There are 33 staff members, 42 senate faculty, 4 continuing lecturers, many Federation appointees, Emeritus Faculty, Postdocs, Pre-Six Lecturers, and 250 graduate students and 750 undergraduate majors.



Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide support to the daytoday management and maintenance of large teaching laboratories to accommodate and facilitate instructional laboratory operation in support of curriculum. Conduct standardized and recurring technical procedures, explore experimental methods, and oversee a diverse range of business operations.

Provide assistance to laboratory users including teaching assistants and undergraduate students in lab, keep records, order supplies for laboratory use, and assure availability of materials. Assist with setup and maintenance of laboratory equipment including testing and operation of laboratory equipment. Serve as night supervisor of student teaching assistants and undergraduate student workers, as needed. Clean and maintain student laboratories and preparation rooms.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Demands: Sit at computer and use mouse and keyboard for long periods of time. Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Lifting Requirements: Lift, move and carry boxes weighing up to 50 lbs.

·       Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience working in a laboratory, maintaining supplies and equipment, and providing assistance to users.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of general and organic chemistry consistent with upper division college level including but not limited to terminology, instrumentation, standard laboratory techniques and laboratory safety.

·       Skills to perform standardized and recurring technical tasks.

·       Communication skills to interact effectively with a diverse group of students and staff from differing cultures and backgrounds.

·       Ability to follow safety rules, protocols, and established practices.

·       Demonstrated organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience supervising students.

·       Experience in conducting standardized and recurring technical procedures, exploring experimental methods, and overseeing a diverse range of business operations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Ability to learn, follow and enforce University policies and procedures regarding laboratory safety.
