Job Summary
Department Purpose
The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.
Job Summary
Under general supervision, perform technical laboratory procedures in support of research activities focused on the characterization of synaptic health in cognitive aging and in neurological disorders in nonhuman primates.
Work closely with PI, Lab Manager and laboratory academic personnel by providing technical laboratory support, data entry and analyses of lab data, processing and storing cell and animal tissue samples, and conducting laboratory procedures according to established protocols.
Perform data collection and data management including, assisting with biochemical and microscopy data collection from samples collected from rhesus monkey. Collect images and data with confocal microscopy. Perform analyses of dendritic arborization and dendritic spines densities. Perform statistical analysis on quantitative data collected from microscopic techniques. Manage collected data, insuring robust backup systems are in place.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Laboratory work requires performing repetitive tasks, responding to timers.
  • Performing several tests simultaneously, using analytical instruments associated with laboratory work, and using microscopes (and other sensitive lab equipment) for long periods.
  • Safely lift and carry objects such as lab tools and biomaterials and chemical (stains, regents, and buffers) up to 30 pounds.
  • Lift and access items located above counter level.
  • Has direct contact to work with animals.
  • Use of biological safety cabinets in use of balance, pH meter, laboratory instruments such as laminar flow hoods, centrifuges, plate washers, ELISA readers, flow cytometers.
  • Provide after hour, weekend, and holiday emergency support to ensure projects are attended according to protocols and schedules.
  • Perform diversified tasks that may require standing, squatting, kneeling, bending, stooping, or standing up to 8 hours per day.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers in according to protocols.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level 2+ facilities where non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as SIV or Herpes B virus.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shield, and head cover.
  • Work with human and nonhuman primate specimens and chemical agents. Position may require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. In such instances, employee will be required to wear protective clothing for personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
  • Work irregular hours (early mornings, early evening, and/or weekends, as needed). Work occasional overtime including some weekends and holidays.
  • California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances; and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the State Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1990.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
  • Academic training and experience in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field with a focus on general working knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, and/or neuroscience theories and principles.
  • Experience working in a research laboratory in the areas of neuroscience, Animal Science, Animal Biology, or related research fields involving animal models (nonhuman primates or rodents) used in research laboratory.
  • Experience with computer applications (includes 3-D constructs) for transcribing raw data and entering and analyzing sample/research results.
  • Experience to perform a variety of laboratory techniques and conduct analyses of lab results. Applied mathematical skills to calculate and prepare written data summaries.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
  • Knowledge of chemicals and requirements for safe handling procedures.
  • Skills to follow specific protocols for data collection and follow GLP standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Applied experience to understand and apply concepts of translational research including working with and handling animals in a research environment (assisting in sterile techniques including tissue harvests, collection of specimens, and other animal-related procedures).
  • Experience in the use and application of electron microscopes in conducting research analyses.
  • Applied work experience to maintain and keep accurate and organized lab records and project reporting requirements and related record keeping.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
  • Analytical skills to follow protocols, troubleshoot problems, and prepare medium and solutions.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and proper use, handling, monitoring, measurement and disposal of radioisotopes, carcinogens, and biohazardous substances including disposal of chemicals and radioactive chemicals.
  • Skills and knowledge of chemistry to prepare solutions or reagents for lab experiments and knowledge of standard laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures; skills to maintain purchasing records and chemical inventories; and to store and organize in appropriate locations.
