About the Department

 

The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Lab Associate in the Printmaking Lab, this is a full-time hourly position. The printmaking lab is a 4500 square foot facility with space and access for screen printing, relief, intaglio and lithography processes. Students learn how to safely use its specialized equipment and navigate within the ecosystem of the facility and its collaborative learning environment. Our goal is to continue to expand the use of this facility so that in addition to a classroom, the space will serve as a research and teaching laboratory for students and faculty from across the university. The position of Lab Associate will be the key support role for the printmaking lab as a core research facility. In addition to duties listed below, the Lab Associate will facilitate workshops, tutorials, and facility orientations including health and safety training for students and faculty from other schools within DAAP and the UC community. Evening and weekend hours will be required.


Essential Functions
  • Supervise activities, oversee and instruct students and faculty on proper use of tools and equipment used for projects.
  • Design & implement system to maintain records, such as required trainings needed by both faculty and students for specific processes within the printmaking facility.
  • Design & implement a facility schedule to accommodate access to students currently enrolled in classes in addition to open hours for all other students and faculty that have received training and authorization to use the space.
  • Organize and maintain a professional shop environment. This includes but is not limited to inventory, maintenance, and consulting/collaborating with faculty and staff regarding purchase records and budget.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot all shop equipment; regularly analyze condition of equipment and coordinate maintenance and repair.
  • Maintain and organize repairs records and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are accessible to faculty, staff, and students; coordinate with UC Environmental Health & Safety to properly dispose of chemistry and solvents.
  • Instruct students and faculty in safe use of equipment, tools, chemistry and solvents for the following print media processes: screenprint, lithography, etching, monoprint, relief, and digital processes.
  • Demonstrate routine laboratory, shop, or studio procedures to students; Supervise students and/or employees working in the print shop; Give technical advice relative to equipment.
  • Clean and/or supervise cleaning and ensure the shop is in order; Supervise student work study employees and users in proper lab clean up.
  • Coordinate software updates for digital workstations.
  • Consult with faculty members on specifications for new or specialized equipment or materials; Assist in the design, development, construction or assembly of new equipment.

Required Education
  • Associate's Degree.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

One (1) year of experience in an area of technical specialty.
