About the Department

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) program offers undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. The College of Engineering at UC has pioneered the mandatory cooperative experience for engineers since 1906 and has excellent relations with the industrial sector. The Biomedical Engineering program has 17 full-time faculty, about 35 full-time graduate students and almost 400 undergraduate students. The external funding for research and education is approximately one million per year; the program has well equipped research and teaching laboratories that occupy over 10,000 square feet of space.

Job Overview

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in the College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Cincinnati invite candidates to apply for the position of Lab Associate. The Lab Associate will initially be responsible for the clean-out and move of BME academic laboratories as they transition to the new Bioscience Building, expected to open September 2022. The Lab Associate be under the direct supervision of the Department Head of Biomedical Engineering. In this role, the Lab Associate will be expected to support a wide variety of new and existing lab-scale to pilot-scale instrumentation and equipment utilized to educate students in Biomedical Engineering.

 

The Lab Associate will provide support activities for the research and/or teaching needs of designated laboratories and to administer the daily operational policies of the laboratories. Such Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining safe, clean, and functional laboratory facilities; planning, developing, and coordinating the safety program for the laboratories; maintaining, operating, and training others to use lab- and pilot- scale equipment in Biomedical Engineering Unit operations, including the use of computer-based data acquisition and process control; overseeing operation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation and equipment; ordering parts/chemicals and maintaining inventory for laboratories; participating in laboratory instrumentation and equipment setup, safety orientation, and documentation; attending assigned University compliance training as communicated by the University, College of Engineering and Applied Science, or the Department Head; and providing technical support for academic or research projects as directed by the Department Head.


This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.


Essential Functions
  • Supervise, train, assist and/or instruct faculty and students using laboratory facilities.
  • Monitor activities within designated laboratories.
  • Maintain all laboratory equipment, including ordering of supplies; perform repair work, and schedule professional repair.
  • Assist faculty on project feasibility and design.
  • Administer safety programs.
  • Act as liaison with local industry regarding specifications and availability of new and used laboratory equipment.
  • Recommend space and equipment assignments as requested and resolve any conflicts for space and equipment.

 


Required Education
  • Associate's Degree.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

One (1) year of experience in an area of technical specialty.


Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Experience in the set-up, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and mechanical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Experience in the use of computers and basic engineering data acquisition software packages.
  • Knowledge of current laboratory safety and OSHA standards.
  • Ability to learn different engineering software packages.
  • Experience using process control software packages
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
