Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Laboratory Assistant position for the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biomedical Science at Oregon State University (OSU).
An experienced laboratory assistant is needed for to work on a project focusing on understanding the viruelence gene regulatory pathways of of the human bacterial pathogens Vibrio cholerae and Yersinia pestis. The project will involve working with a bacterial pathogens, specifically measuring bacterial growth rates, generating defined mutants and performing general lab duties. This student will be advised by Dr. Claudia Häse and Dr. Candice Thorstenson in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biomedical Science.
Position Duties
The duties required for this project are:
  • 30% – General laboratory maintenance (cleaning dishes, waste disposal, sterilizing equipment, etc.)
  • 50% – Experiment support (making media, making stock solutions, bacterial cultures, oyster shucking)
  • 20% – Data analysis and written summaries; project presentations

Additional Required Qualifications
The applicant must have experience working with bacterial cultures in a biosafety level II laboratory and some course work or a good understanding of microbiology techniques is required. Additionally, applicants should have a great work ethic and diligent at keeping a complete laboratory notebook and documenting all activities.
