Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Marie and Alexander Shipman Cerebral Palsy Muscle Disease Research Laboratory within UCLA Orthopedic Surgery is seeking to hire a full-time Laboratory Assistant. The Lab is dedicated to advancing the understanding of cerebral palsy and neuromuscular disorders through translational research. The lab studies muscle biology, tissue pathology, and disease mechanisms to support the development of improved treatments and outcomes for patients. Key responsibilities include:
  • Support daily laboratory operations, including inventory management, supply ordering, and coordination of laboratory meetings
  • Assist with onboarding laboratory volunteers and maintaining laboratory safety and compliance standards
  • Coordinate human tissue specimen collection, processing, storage, and biobank activities
  • Perform data entry and database management using RedCap and other research systems
  • Support IRB compliance activities and maintain research documentation
  • Maintain mammalian cell cultures, including routine monitoring and aseptic techniques
  • Prepare tissue samples for research studies, including tissue sectioning using histological equipment such as cryostat
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient laboratory environment

Salary range: $27.04/hr - $32.31/hr
Job Qualifications

Required:
  • Experience with database management and data entry, preferably using RedCap or similar systems
  • Knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques and aseptic laboratory practices
  • Ability to use histological equipment, including cryostats, for tissue preparation
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and proper handling of biological and chemical materials
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, researchers, students, and volunteers
  • Ability to complete required university safety and research compliance training

Preferred:
  • Currently pursuing or recently obtained a degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Physiology, or related field
  • Knowledge of IRB regulations and human subjects research compliance
  • Experience supporting laboratory administration, volunteer coordination, or research operations
