High school diploma or GED and five years of laboratory animal experience. LATG Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Animal laboratory Science or two additional years of animal laboratory experience with supervisor recommendation. Able to lift 50 pounds, push or pull loaded cards. Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Grade ND Wage minimum $21.69/hr

Position Description

A Laboratory Animal Technician IV (LAT IV) provides daily husbandry and cagewash operations for the humane care of laboratory animals. This position provides training and may be responsible for entry and mid-level laboratory animal technicians.  This position offers an outstanding career opportunity with the opportunity for advancement. This position is an assistant supervisor position that will oversee husbandry staff.

  • May train new staff in basic animal husbandry and proper use of equipment with particular focus on safety.
  • May assist in the oversight of assigned facility work schedules to include daily, weekly and monthly work schedules
  • Update facility user's guides and provides scheduled refresher training to personnel.  Participates in the writing and review of new SOPs.
  • May provide training and supervision in recognizing common signs of clinical illness.
  • Assist or train in the techniques pertaining to the veterinary medical treatment of animals.
  • In coordination with the Veterinary Staff, assist in the preparation of animals for surgical procedures and the administration of pre-anesthetic agents.
  • Perform and train personnel on sanitation procedures and monitor regularly via microbiological monitoring.
  • Give instruction to husbandry personnel in the principles of barrier-maintained animal colonies and aseptic technique.
  • Monitor compliance of other RRF barrier personnel in the safe use of chemical and biological agents used per study.
  • Monitor the progress and accuracy of record keeping involving all levels of animal facility environment.
  • Train husbandry staff to scan barcoded cage cards and proper ways to add and remove animal cages from the census. 
  • Give input on update to the Veterinary Animal Report database.
  • Teach animal identification procedures such as tattooing and ear tagging.
  • Mentor staff in auto water system repair on ventilated rack systems.
  • Be familiar with the gnotobiotic core and the use of flexible film isolators that enable the maintenance of germ-free or gnotobiotic animals.
  • Maintains Personal Protective Equipment inventories and orders consumables
  • Maintains and updates inventories for a variety of animal housing equipment
  • Coordinates animal housing needs with husbandry staff and prioritizes cagewash tasks
  • Able to perform quality assurance checks on equipment. Confers with physical plant and outside contractors about status and repairs to equipment which include cages, automatic watering system, cage washers, autoclaves and numerous other items.
  • Able to troubleshoot problems and make minor repairs on a variety of mechanical equipment used in animal holding rooms, support areas and cage wash areas.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned.
