Job Summary
Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants to fill a Lab Animal Care Attendant position. This individual is responsible for performing daily care of multiple animal species and for ensuring animal housing facilities are supplied appropriately for animal care, research and teaching activities. This is a kennel husbandry position with indoor/outdoor components.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures animal cages and/or containment rooms are kept clean and orderly. Restocks supplies needed for cleaning rooms and meeting care animal needs.
  • May perform a variety of animal care duties including but not limited to feeding, watering, monitoring basic animal health and behavior, cage change out and cleaning of kennels.
  • May perform a variety of animal care facility services including but not limited to upkeep and maintenance of animal housing areas such as but not limited to sweeping, mopping, sanitization of walls, floors, tables, and equipment.
  • Assists with animal treatment and health needs on an as needed.
  • Assists with quality assurance and reports mechanical or physical plant issues.
  • May perform a variety of duties in animal support areas including but not limited to laundry, cleaning and sterilizing equipment and loading and unloading supply racks.
  • Adherence and understanding of biosecurity protocols including but not limited to wearing correct personal protective equipment (PPE), stocking of PPE, and maintaining footbaths.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Depending on the combination of education and experience, the selected finalist will be hired as an Attendant, Lab Animal Care and assigned level I, II, or III.
Level I requires a High school diploma or equivalent.
Level II requires a High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in animal care and husbandry practices. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

Level III
requires a High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in animal care and husbandry practices. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

  • Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable. Injuries may require professional treatment. Work schedules, volume of work, or priorities seldom change; able to anticipate new work; minimum distractions or interruptions; seldom involves conflicting demands on time.

  • Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

  • Job occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, and stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling.

Minimum Technology Skills
  • Must have basic computer skills and be able to receive and respond to email.
Minimum License and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Some positions may require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), and/or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG).
  • Some positions may require the ability to obtain AALAS certifications once hired.
