Lab and Research Technician 2 - Dwyer Lab

The Dwyer lab in the Department of Cell Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Lab and Research Technician 2 to work on experiments to understand normal and abnormal brain development, utilizing molecular biology, mouse genetics, cell culture, immunocytochemistry, and microscopy. The incumbent will work closely with the PI and other lab members to complete tasks to support NIH-funded research and investigate how neural stem cells divide to produce neurons, and the function of cytoskeletal proteins during cell division and cell shape changes.
The Lab Tech will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes maintaining mouse colonies, genotyping, ordering and maintaining supplies, preparing stock solutions, maintaining equipment, training of other personnel, and assisting the PI with environmental health and safety compliance. The position requires appropriate data analysis including statistics, lab notebook and electronic data keeping, and clear data presentation.
 

Minimum Requirements

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.  Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred  Requirements
Education: Education: A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. Major or minor in a biomedical science is preferred.

Knowledge of PCR, Molecular Biology, Microscopy, Tissue Sectioning, Cell Culture, Immunoblotting and Animal Husbandry is preferred.

Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, working with others, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills.
 

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
