Description of Work

Department Description:

Established in 1925, we are the second oldest theatre department in the country. Our faculty members are both scholars and artists, teachers and practitioners, constantly moving back and forth between the classroom and the theatre. The Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art is the crucible where students transform learning into practice every day. The Kenan Theatre Company (KTC), part of the Department of Dramatic Art, is the undergraduate production company housed in the Kenan Theatre. KTC, comprised of students who are interested in the practical application of theatre through production, features a student-produced season with faculty, guest, and student-directed productions.

Position Summary/Description:
This position will serve and the Technical Director for the Kenan Theatre Company (KTC) and as the Facilities Manager for the Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art. The Kenan Theatre Company is the undergraduate production arm of the Department of Dramatic Art. Under the supervision of the Director of Undergraduate Production, the Technical Director will lead all builds for sets, lights, sound, and props for the Company. She/he will draft (VectorWorks); oversee the shop; and be able to supervise, mentor, and train undergraduate students with a variety of skill levels. As Facilities Manager, this position is also responsible for the maintenance of the building which houses the Department of Dramatic Art and PlayMakers Repertory Company. These duties include but are not limited to performing minor repairs; submitting facilities requests; coordinating with University facilities management; purchasing equipment; coordinating facilities upgrades; and maintenance of specialized equipment and machines in instructional and performance spaces. Position is 11 months but can be flexible to accommodate external summer theater work.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in theatre arts, and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills:
The position requires strong carpentry skills, knowledge of safe work practices, ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekend, and even temperament.

Preferred Qualifications:
BA/BFA with 3-5 years relevant theatre experience beyond the undergraduate degree or MFA preferably in Technical Production; facilities management experience preferred.
