Position Type Full-Time
Position Details
The Shapiro Center for Creative Writing and Criticism at Wesleyan University seeks to appoint a Kim-Frank Postdoctoral Fellow in Criticism for 2024-25. The position is for one academic year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The teaching load is one course per semester.
The fellow will play a major leadership role at a time of unprecedented growth for the Center. Working to strengthen the University’s foundation for creative practice in long-form magazine and journalistic writing, the fellow will help conceptualize a five-course sequence in criticism. These courses will form the basis for further planning of a possible minor in criticism that could pair organically with humanities, social sciences, and sciences disciplines. Along with the Director, the fellow would oversee all syllabi and class design; establish benchmarks for the future minor; establish elective sub-fields and linked minors, including minors in translation, journalism, publishing, and podcasting; and work in close cooperation with the Center’s partner departments, centers, and organizations, both inside and outside the university. The fellow will teach one introductory course in the fall (e.g., “Practical Criticism for Poetry,” “Practical Criticism for the Novel”) and one advanced course in the spring (e.g., “Genres of Criticism,” “Mediums of Criticism,” “History of Criticism”). Finally, the fellow will participate in the selection and interview process for the Center’s fellowships and internships. With the Director, the fellow will manage and mentor the Kim-Frank Creative Writing Fellow, a one-year post-graduate fellowship, and the Center’s expanding base of undergraduate student workers and liaisons.
On the extra-curricular side, the fellow will assist in organizing and running the Center’s four year-long series. In 2024-25, these will include “The Art of Editing,” a live interview series with subsequent podcast production and distribution; “WesPress x Shapiro,” a poetry reading series organized in cooperation with the editor and marketing director of Wesleyan University Press; “Ask Me Anything,” a lunchtime conversation series, which brings alumni working in the literary arts back to campus to discuss their careers, organized with the Gordon Career Center; and “The Shapiro Master Classes,” two to four three-session long classes with leading literary creators. The fellow will be encouraged to add new series as well as alter existing ones according to his or her interests.
The fellowship is ideal for a post-doctoral student in English, comparative literature, art history, musicology, or film. The fellow will gain substantial experience in teaching at a top-tier university, while also building a wide network in the broadening world of non-academic and multi-media writing and arts administration. Wesleyan University is a highly selective liberal arts university that values both scholarship and teaching, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.
