Department Description

College Opportunity Programs (COP) works in partnership with administrators, teachers, and students in specified elementary, middle and high schools in regional K-12 school districts. The goal of COP is to increase the number of students from historically low college enrollment communities who prepare for post-secondary preparation with the emphasis on college/university preparation.



Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide participants from culturally diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds with academic skills and enrichment in a 6-week Summer Program (June 24th thru August 2nd); develop academic curriculum for classroom instruction in the subject area of Spanish specifically for high school students; provide tutorial assistance; conduct pre- and post-testing; provide written evaluation of student’s programs; maintain academic records; and participate in Upward Bound’s extracurricular activities. May be required to provide instruction in an elective course.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Demands: May climb flights of stairs in residence halls for tutoring sessions.
  • Lifting Requirements: Lift supplies weighing up to 30 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Mandatory attendance at various evening trainings beginning May thru June.

·       Work occasional evenings/nights.

·       Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which will include TB screening.

·       Position is a mandatory reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience developing academic curricula and interactive classroom instruction specifically for high school students.

·       Experience teaching high school students in the area of Spanish (literature, composition, critical reading, and grammar).

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Skills to evaluate students’ needs and progress.

·       Skills to establish and maintain supportive relationships with multi- ethnic participants from culturally diverse disadvantaged backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       A valid CA multi-subject or single subject teaching credential or Master’s degree at the start of employment or currently enrolled in a credential program or Master’s program.

·       Knowledge of and/or experience with TRIO programs.

·       Knowledge of and/or experience with Common Core State Standards.

·       Skills to establish, develop, and maintain supportive working relationships with all staff.
