About the Department
The Office of Academic Affairs seeks to enrich the academic success, engagement, opportunities, and skills of undergraduate students in the College of Engineering at NC State University by supporting a diverse learning environment that is respectful of 21st-century engineering challenges. We promote the engineering profession and an understanding of engineering concepts and habits of mind among a broad set of constituents, including K-20 students/teachers/general public.
The Engineering Place (TEP) is the College of Engineering’s K-20 outreach unit located in the Office of Academic Affairs. Established in 1996, TEP is a national model for engineering outreach programming at both the K12 and undergraduate/graduate levels. TEP’s mission is to increase engineering access, awareness, and knowledge for students not typically represented in engineering by engaging teachers, K-20 students, parents, and the public with innovative programming. The Engineering Place achieves this through:
  • Research-based K12 student programming focused on problem-solving using the Engineering Design Process and Engineering Habits of Mind;
  • Development of undergraduate students;
  • Engineering supplies and resources for NC State faculty, NC State student organizations, and K12 Educators to implement engineering education activities;
  • Teacher professional development supporting teachers with strategies and resources for integrating engineering into their STEM classrooms;
  • The Engineering Lab with a maker space and resource room for undergraduate student usage; and
  • Broader Impact support for NC State Faculty.
Essential Job Duties
The K-20 Outreach Program Coordinator has a strong focus on engineering education and educating K-20 students and teachers about engineering and STEM careers, focusing on student populations historically underrepresented in engineering and broadening access to Engineering career pathways, through a variety of K-20 programming.
The essential duties are to:
  • Develop and implement a variety of high-quality age-appropriate hands-on, inquiry-based K-20 engineering education and STEM student programs aimed at students and educators and aligned with national and state education standards
  • Ensure program activities are cater to broad student needs and learning styles, promoting a welcoming and supportive environment that encourages students of all backgrounds to explore and pursue engineering
  • Collect and analyze assessment data to measure impact and make data-driven improvements for continuous program enhancement
  • Prepare reports on program activities, achievements, and challenges for internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead outreach efforts at the Solar House in renewable energy education.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of curriculum materials, assessments, and participant feedback
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities for K-20 educators to enhance their skills in teaching engineering concepts and strategies to promote engineering education inclusivity in their classrooms.
  • Build and maintain relationships with NC State departments, schools, educational institutions, community organizations, and stakeholders to promote the program and broaden access to K12 engineering
  • Responsible for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of direct reports by carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with university, college, and departmental policies and procedures
  • Work in partnership with the Strategic Marketing and Planning Manager to create engaging promotional materials and utilize various communication channels to raise awareness about engineering education programs as well as develop a strong online presence through social media, website, and other platforms
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Office of Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering by serving on relevant university, college, and department committees, and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, curriculum development, or a related field
  • Experience managing and facilitating educational outreach programs for K-20 students
  • At least 2 years of experience in K-20 schools or STEM outreach programming
  • Familiarity with best practices in Engineering or STEM Education
  • Knowledge of the K-12 North Carolina Standard Course of Study
Other Required Qualifications
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to re-prioritize daily tasks, to accommodate fluctuating needs and deadlines
  • Professional work record characterized by effective leadership and innovation with the ability to inspire and engage students and colleagues
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work in a collaborative environment, as well as carrying out responsibilities with limited supervision
  • Interpersonal skills and political acumen to build effective bridges and collaborative relationships, with the ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and integrity
  • Understand and effectively use Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar Google applications in addition to Adobe Acrobat/Fox-it
  • Ability to lift and move educational materials up to 50lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, curriculum development, or related field
  • North Carolina Teaching License or equivalent
  • Experience leading professional development
