The Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment, and Teaching Excellence (CREATE; https://create.ucsd.edu /) is an energetic education research and partnership center that promotes equity in education by actively linking UC San Diego to the local K20 community (kindergarten through graduate school). We conduct and support education-related, equity-focused research and evaluation and provide college preparation and success programs, school improvement efforts, and educator professional development. CREATE is housed within the School of Social Sciences at UC San Diego and is an independent, interdisciplinary research center. CREATE is committed to increasing national, statewide, and local understanding and development of education-related services, particularly for low-income, minority pre-K to 20 students. CREATE itself houses experts in K12 education, education policy, anthropology, psychology, cognitive science, and sociology, as well as experts in university outreach programming and K12 teacher development across mathematics, science, computer science, and language arts (reading and writing). The CREATE umbrella has since expanded to include K12 student outreach programs (e.g., UC’s Early Academic Outreach Program, US Department of Education’s TRIO Program, CSSI’s STEM outreach programs) as well as K12 teacher professional development projects and support organizations (e.g., San Diego Science Project, San Diego Math Project, CA Reading and Literacy Project, San Diego Area Writing Project, San Diego Computer Science Teachers Association, code.org training hub, CSSI).

The Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) at UC San Diego is one of nine programs administered system-wide by the UC Office of the President to increase the number of low-income and first-generation college going students on UC campuses. EAOP’s mission is to assist first-generation, socio-economically disadvantaged, and English-language learners by helping them prepare for postsecondary education. As a result, EAOP works closely with the local area high schools to provide free college-ready services such as A-G advising, workshops, conferences, field trips, and summer programs. Begun in 1976, UC San Diego’s program currently serves over 6,000 students at 20 San Diego and Imperial Counties schools. Of the approximately 1,000 high school seniors served each year by UC San Diego's EAOP, more than half become eligible to attend UC San Diego and other UC institutions, and more than 80% will attend college at a UC campus or elsewhere. EAOP represents the largest student-centered initiative in the state.
