The Junior Draper is jointly responsible for the creation of costumes, interpretation of original design work and custom patterning based on the design, and all facets of the construction process for the costumes as well as alterations, fittings, maintenance of pulled or rented clothing items, in collaboration with the costume faculty. The Junior Draper is the liaison between staff stitchers and undergraduate assistants and assists with labs associated with DRAM 1114. This position reports to the Costume Tech. Faculty and Studio Supervisor.
Duties to include but not limited to:
- Performs construction, alteration, and refurbishment of costumes.
- Creates pattern work for construction of new garments. Interprets original design work and custom patterning based on the design.
- Fits and prepares alterations of garments.
- Cuts fabric based on created patterns for projects.
- Maintains costume stock.
- Runs wardrobe and supervises wardrobe crew for main-state productions.
- Assists in costume craftwork. Performs finishing work using both hands an industrial machine stitching.
- Presses, steams, and labels finished costumes.
- Assists undergraduate assistants and costume lab students. Assists in supervising stitching apprentices and volunteers on made-to-order garments and fitting alterations.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree AND:
- 12 months of professional theatre experience in a costume shop.
Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 60 months of related experience.
Skills:
- Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions
- Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty and staff
- Effective oral and written communication
- Ability to work independently and good organizational skills
- Strong initiative to solve problems
- Able to complete work within deadlines
- Advanced patterning and costume construction skills
- Experience using industrial sewing machines
- Expertise in altering existing costumes and supervising fittings
- Working knowledge of theatrical costuming practices and techniques
Advertised Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand for extended periods
- Lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to kneel and/or stoop for short periods
- Ability to engage in repetitive motions
Work Conditions:
- Physical stress or discomfort includes, but is not limited to, odors, greasy, inky or dirty materials, extreme temperature, irritating noises, heavy lifting, stooping, standing, bending, climbing or sitting with no relief and safety hazards. Job duties performed in clinical settings or labs may include exposure to human blood, blood products, or other body fluids and potential exposure to diseases and infections.
Departmental Preferences:
- Bachelor’s degree in costume technology
- Experience in construction of dancewear
- Tailoring experience
- Worked or trained in a professional costume shop a minimum of 3 years
Certifications or Licenses:
- Valid Driver's License required to travel to fabric shops and pick up materials for costumes and/or props
Supervision:
- Team Leader - 3 Staff
- Student Group - Undergraduate Assistants
