Position description
The department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking to hire Junior/Assistant Specialists to conduct research in the Guthrie lab.
The gut microbiota produces a vast and structurally diverse array of small molecules. Remarkably, bacterial processing of ingested food and drug compounds alone accounts for the production of thousands of metabolites, many of which are not well studied despite possessing disease connections. The Guthrie lab aims to decipher the basic biology, sources of heterogeneity, and opportunities to modulate diet-derived microbiota-dependent metabolites (MDMs) for beneficial host signaling. We use computational methods and mass spectrometry to quantify bacterial metabolites and molecular techniques to investigate their function in vitro and in vivo.
The successful candidates are expected to perform molecular biology techniques; assist in culture stem cells; and analyze RNA and protein expression via qPCR analysis, immunofluorescence , and Westernblot. The candidates will assist in lab management. Candidates will also present at lab meetings and have the opportunity to contribute to publications and participate in career development activities.
