Job Summary

The Junior Architect / Interior Designer is an essential part of the success of the Planning and Design team within PD&C. This position will be involved in most projects in the planning and design phase, some carrying through to completion.

This position is classified with an emergency response designation of Essential Reporting. An employee designated as Essential Reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery, and is expected to report to campus as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties

  • Conduct site assessments and gather data on existing facilities to inform the planning and design process.
  • Develop schematic layout options for offices, kitchens, lab suites, wet labs, and furniture layouts, taking into consideration factors such as space optimization, equipment placement, workspace ergonomics, safety regulations, and accessibility. Incorporate innovative design solutions that enhance the functionality and adaptability of spaces.
  • Create design concepts, multiple layouts, and mood boards to communicate the proposed interior design vision. Assist in selecting and specifying appropriate materials, finishes, furniture, and fixtures that align with the functional and aesthetic goals of projects.
  • Apply a good understanding of relevant building codes and safety standards, and coordinate with Caltech’s Environmental Health and Safety Office. Work closely with the PD&C technical team and project managers to ensure that designs are aligned with project goals and meet Caltech standards.
  • Prepare detailed project planning and project design presentations for review by stakeholders and present designs to the PDC team and clients.
  • Create realistic renderings of both interior and exterior renovations and signage to aid in project scope review, design decisions, and financial approvals.
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in space planning and laboratory design.
  • Assist in updating Design Guidelines in all areas related to architecture and interior design.
  • Responsible for the graphic design of all signage on campus, including interior and exterior signage, construction signage, and donor signage package preparation.
  • Assist in collection and verify planning relevant information including interior space data and exterior grounds across campus.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field.
  • Strong familiarity with furniture systems selection and specification.
  • Excellent graphic representation and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with building codes, accessibility requirements, safety regulations, and sustainability principles.
  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, rendering, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to travel to existing spaces for data collection across campus and job sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GIS mapping and data management.
  • Familiarity with science and technology spaces and laboratory design.
