Johan Paulsson’s lab at Harvard Medical School is spearheading a nationwide initiative to combat antimicrobial resistance using high-precision technology that requires novel microfluidics and optical engineering. To that end, we will be hiring staff scientists with backgrounds in microfluidics and optics to support the technology-development projects spearheaded by academic members of the Paulsson lab. The broader team includes 25 academic groups, hospitals, and companies, and the program is funded by one of the largest grants in Harvard's history (https://hms.harvard.edu/news/hms-researcher-lead-104-million-federal-project-tackling-antibiotic-resistance).
Example microfluidics-based projects include: Fabricating microfluidic chambers on the micron- or sub-micron scale (for example, using fluid dynamics, E-beam and 3D lithography, maskless aligners, micro-printers, etc.) and connecting them to larger mesoscopic features (for example, via CNC micro-milling or laser welding)
Example optics-based projects include: Integrating ultra-fast stages, hardware triggers, and complex light-guides into custom-built microscopes; writing drivers and creating effective image acquisition workflows; and developing SOPs for imaging data and metadata acquisition, transfer, storage, and pre-processing.
Strong applicants for junior positions will have substantial hands-on experience with required technologies. Strong applicants for senior positions will have substantial and extensive hands-on experience with the technologies they are expert in and experience training others in these technologies. Applicants should be self-motivated and equally adept working independently and bringing their skills to a collaborative and conscientious multidisciplinary team. Designated projects involve working with human clinical samples that contain BSL-2 pathogens, but participation in these projects is elective. Microbiology and coding experience is appreciated, but not required.
Non-traditional applicants (e.g., those with industry experience) are encouraged to apply. Competitive compensation is possible.
