Position Overview:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)
The position is 100% (full-time for 12 months) and is located at UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory in Bodega Bay, Ca. This position will have laboratory duties under the supervision of California Department of Fish and Wildlife Shellfish Health Laboratory's and UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory Research Associate Colleen Burge. Overall, the goal of this position is to provide support for two projects focused on providing solutions for OsHV-1, a deadly oyster pathogen.
1) Assisting with the US West Coast sentinel monitoring program, 'an early warning system' for pathogen detection for the US West Coast shellfish aquaculture industry including receiving and organizing samples for health examinations, necropsy, DNA extractions, and qPCR for oyster pathogens, primarily OsHV-1 and select Vibrio species.
2) Assisting with analysis of 16S bacterial community from samples collected during the 2020 US West Coast sentinel monitoring program.
3) Assisting with analysis of samples collected during experimental challenges of oysters including receiving and organizing samples, necropsy, DNA extractions, and qPCR for OsHV-1.
4) Assisting with general laboratory operations: Ordering supplies, lab organization, maintaining equipment, maintaining state and federal permits, and maintaining a safe and well-organized laboratory environment. Assisting with laboratory safety information and training.
5) Entering, organizing, analyzing, and interpretation of data. Opportunities for independence and leadership in research projects. Writing and presenting on research for public and scientific audiences.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist is expected to actively support ongoing research activities for students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff. This will include, but may not be limited to, review and editing of proposals, presentation of results at scientific conferences, and providing feedback on manuscripts in preparation related to their area of expertise.
The Junior Specialist will be expected to participate in and contribute to the development of an inclusive and accessible working environment for our research program. The Jr. Specialist will also engage with the academic community at Bodega Marine Laboratory through participation in lab meetings and research seminars.
Where appropriate, the Jr. Specialist will be provided opportunities for co-authorship on published manuscripts and conference presentations.
III. University and Public Service (5% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist will contribute to University and Public Service by:

  • Participating in the mentorship of undergraduates, interns, and volunteers in the laboratory.
  • Serving on local departmental or institute committees based upon the Jr. Specialist's areas of interest.
  • Participating in lab group meetings and department and institute seminars and meetings.

  • Bend, stoop, and work in tight, confined areas
    A Junior Specialist appointee should have a baccalaureate or similar degree in a discipline relevant or related to the research conducted in the unit hiring the appointee, or if lacking a relevant baccalaureate degree should have experience with the appropriate specialized research methods. In general, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master's or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline or a baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of experience with the specialized methods as a Junior Specialist.
