Summary of Duties:
The Journalist/News Fellow – KHQ/KNDU position is a two-year fixed term appointment serving as a civic news reporter in the Murrow News Fellowship Program. This is an entry-level position reporting on civic affairs in under-served communities.
As a Journalist/News Fellow you will gather, write, and produce civic journalism of interest to the assigned newsroom’s audiences and news beats; these topics may include health, education, economic development, environment, criminal justice and under-represented communities. You may be required to produce content in various formats, including audio, video, text and digital presentations. The assigned newsroom will provide editing, guidance, and professional support in collaboration with Murrow’s Program Manager.
In this position you will covers central Washington – from the Yakima Valley to the Tri-Cities to the greater Spokane region – for two NBC affiliates (KHQ  and KNDU ). You will dig deep into a range of political, cultural, agricultural, and environmental topics including homelessness, housing, drug abuse, mental health, and the debate over dam removal and salmon.
The Journalist/News Fellow - KHQ/KNDU will be located in the Tri-Cities area or Yakima.
Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a field relevant to area of specialization. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

  • Position requires a degree in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or closely related field.

  • Strong news reporting skills to produce quality journalism.

  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree from any accredited higher ed institution in Washington state.

  • Knowledge of Washington state community issues.

  • Experience or training in new technologies for the gathering and delivery of news.

  • Experience with audio.

  • Experience using social media in a news environment.

  • Experience researching complex issues.

  • Experience with data reporting and public records.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of hire, a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.

  • Fluency in a foreign language.

Monthly Salary:
$4,120.91 - $4,583.33

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
