The John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture, in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library seeks a candidate to fill the position of Franklin Research Center intern to provide support for public services and collection development activities. This internship provides an opportunity to work closely with the center’s collections which include rare books, personal papers and manuscripts, oral histories, audiovisual, and ephemeral materials that document the African and African Diaspora experience from the 16th century to present day.

- Provides reference services for remote and on-site researchers interested in the Franklin Research Center collections.
- Assists with library instruction, including meeting with instructors, developing class objectives, selecting materials, co-teaching classes, and participating in instructional assessment. There may also be opportunities to create online modules for remote instruction
- Assists with public programming and other outreach activities such as website development and maintenance, event promotion, social media posts, writing blog posts, and exhibitions.
- Assists with collection development activities such as catalog searching, collections intake, and creating/revising subject LibGuides.
- Assists librarians with special projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Prior experience in a special collections setting and/or completion of at least one course in public history and/or archival theory and practice; academic background in African and African American studies.

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 16 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 8:30-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. This internship will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries. Must work from inside North Carolina.
