JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Journalism with the rank of Professor.

Education: A Juris Doctor or PhD in Communications, Political Science or related fields is required. The successful candidate must complete all degree requirements by the appointment start date.

Experience: We are seeking a candidate to fill an endowed chair, the John and Ann Curley Professor of First Amendment Studies. This candidate will teach and lead research relevant to the First Amendment, particularly as it pertains to the practice of journalism, and the defense of journalists and their work.

We are seeking someone with experience, expertise and interest in fields such as:

the Freedom of Information Act; the use and misuse of generative artificial intelligence; defending journalists from attack in the field and online.

The new Curley Chair will be expected to teach two courses per semester to undergraduates on law and mass communications, among other subjects, in addition to their own research and work with graduate students in the college.

Penn State Law (PSL) and the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications (COMM) offer a joint degree leading to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Media Studies. The successful candidate for the John and Curley Professor would serve as the liaison for COMM and be the Joint Degree J.D./M.A. Program Faculty Adviser.

The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with other faculty interested in First Amendment issues across departments in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications and will be regarded as a thought leader nationally on press freedom issues.

The appointee will be a faculty member in the Department of Journalism, starting in Fall 2024.

The Department of Journalism is part of the Bellisario College, one of the largest accredited communication programs in the nation. The college has an active student media ecosystem and is home to the NewsLab at Penn State. Students and faculty routinely work together on impactful journalism projects that are published professionally and compete for industry awards.
