Position Summary

The Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to recruit a senior scholar to serve as the Joel R. Williamson Distinguished Professor. This professorship is a prestigious University chair representing the institution’s enduring engagement with the study of the American South. Candidates considered for this position should have a consequential record of achievement and a demonstrable commitment to undergraduate teaching and graduate student mentorship. Additionally, the holder of the Williamson Distinguished Professorship is expected to provide intellectual and visionary leadership in the area of Southern Studies; collaborate with colleagues across relevant fields and units; model engaged humanities on and off campus; and cultivate Carolina’s significant resources related to the study of the American South. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of full professor and will have a tenured appointment in the Department of American Studies as well as the opportunity for adjunct or joint appointments in other academic units. The Williamson Distinguished Professorship provides generous annual support for the holder’s research-related activities. We favor candidates who can contribute to UNC-Chapel Hill’s academic mission as a public institution, especially through commitment to diversity of perspective, intercultural understanding, and engagement with local resources and communities.

Educational Requirements

PHD in American Studies, or related fields broadly conceived.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates are expected to present evidence of excellence in teaching at a college or university and of distinguished research and publication in their field of specialization.
