The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) invites applications for an ITER Research and Operations Coordinator (IROC).

The IROC will work closely with PPPL Research and Engineering departments and the ITER Diagnostics and Infrastructure Project teams at PPPL to coordinate, organize, and facilitate ITER research and operations plans, proposals, and projects. An initial list of IROC responsibilities includes (not necessarily in priority order):

  • Obtaining a detailed understanding of the ITER Research Plan, identification of potential areas of research and operational leadership for the U.S. and PPPL research communities, and development and coordination of proposals responding to DOE FES solicitations for developing the ITER research team. Potential target research areas include plasma control, whole device modelling, remote participation and analysis infrastructure, and operations team formation.
  • Representing PPPL at national workshops defining team formation and governance structures for the ITER research team
  • Representing PPPL and the national burning plasma research community in the development of technical infrastructure requirements for remote collaboration and advanced data visualization capabilities in the Princeton Plasma Innovation Center (PPIC).
  • Identification and coordination of diagnostic physicist participation (PPPL and collaborators) in the design, scope development, risk evaluation, technical review, and costing and scheduling of diagnostic tasks in the ITER Diagnostics and Infrastructure Project led by PPPL.
  • Identification and exploitation of ITER research and operations activities that support design and operation of a U.S. Fusion Pilot Plant.
