Position Overview

The Technology Support Center Manager is responsible for strategic planning, development, and management of IT infrastructure, operations, and staff for the Engineering Technology Support Center (TSC). Applying technical expertise and leadership, the position manages Tier 1 & Tier 2 Technical Support Specialists, System and/or Application Administrators, and students. While reporting to the Associate Director of Support Services, this position also receives projects directly from the School of Engineering Dean, Directors, and Department Chairs supported by the TSC. The manager will work directly with the Associate Director of Support Services to set priorities for the TSC. The position serves as the executive contact for the Dean and the departments within the Engineering TSC and needs to be highly accessible to their staff and users. This position will be responsible for managing all KU IT services provided in the School of Engineering including but not limited to; faculty, staff and students and IT services for Classrooms, Laboratories, Research and day-to-day IT operations.


Job Description

15% - Serve as lead on all technology matters within the TSC area.
15% - Provide strategic planning for technology activities, including the identification, development, prioritization, and management of IT projects.
10% - Develop process improvements that elevate the efficiencies and effectiveness of IT support.
10% - Research & recommend equipment and software purchases in response to department needs.
10% - Manage TSC technical staff that provides system and application support and administration as well as website support. Actively identify and arrange appropriate professional training and development for managed positions.
10% - Prepare timely and accurate performance evaluations. Monitor performance of IT staff to identify problem areas and then develop plan to address issues, enhance quality of service, and prevent future problems.
10% - Oversee technology upgrades to ensure full configuration and effective operations.
5% - Collaborate with other TSC managers on technology issues, and participate on work groups and committees as assigned.
5% - Collaborate with other KU IT units to facilitate solutions for customers.
5% - Track and monitor issues to ensure resolution occurs in a timely manner.
5% - Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/ GED and seven years of relevant professional experience, or an Associate’s degree and five years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant professional experience.
  • One year in a supervisory and/or progressively responsible management role.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience managing servers, desktop applications and/or network systems.
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail as evidenced in application materials.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience providing customer service in helpdesk environment solving technical/workstation problems.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience supporting Windows or Linux operating systems.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a technology related field.
  • IT work experience at the University of Kansas.
  • Three plus years’ experience supervising full-time staff.
  • At least one year of professional experience with:
  • Microsoft System Center & Configuration Manager (SCCM)
  • Microsoft Active Directory & Group Policy
  • ITIL best practices
  • A ticket management system such as ServiceNow
  • Server administration
  • Linux administration
  • 5.  Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly across all levels of the organization and to work closely with senior administration to develop and support the organizational vision.

    6.  Strong organizational skills, ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects and determine their priorities.
