Job Summary: The IT Technical Specialist IV performs advanced IT activities for specialized, complex and/or functional areas requiring the expert knowledge and professional application of IT principles, practices and techniques in accordance with industry standards and university policy. Requires a great amount of evaluation, originality or ingenuity. May be responsible for training, assisting or supervising lower level IT personnel and other staff. May lead projects and cross-functional activities.


Additional Department Summary: The Programmer Analyst III designs, develops, and supports moderate to high complexity software and hardware systems to support the administrative function of the University under minimal supervision. This may include enterprise and highly critical applications. As a consultant in residence, although supervised by the centralized Office of Information Technology, this position will work directly with a single department as their primary resource to support their IT needs, troubleshooting and resolving issues, and responding to their questions and concerns in a timely manner. As a member of central IT, this position will have access to a department of professional IT resources who can assist when necessary. Develops, maintains, and supports software processes, web applications, reporting suites, and training materials. Maintains websites using WordPress. Installs, customizes, supports, and creates integrations for vendor-supplied software systems. Analyzes and resolves problems arising with the use of software systems. Manages hardware inventory and upgrades.

Specifically, this position will support OTIDE, primarily managing their Technolutions Slate environment. Builds new processes. Supports existing processes and keeps the environment up to date. This instance of Slate is focused on UA’s Distance Learning campus (UA Early College and students enrolled in UA Online), managing admissions applications and student success-related processes, including communications and reporting. Collaborates with the Undergraduate and Graduate admissions offices.

This position may be eligible for remote hybrid work.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and one (1) year of IT experience; OR Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of IT experience; OR Associate’s degree and five (5) years of IT experience; OR High School Diploma or GED and seven (7) years of IT experience. Knowledge of advanced programming, networking, system, multimedia, instructional or security technology skills or knowledge of project management methods and applications. May require advanced level training or certification.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Three (3) years of experience in relevant IT fields (development and maintenance of software applications, relational database management systems, computer programming, web development, or system administration). High level of experience supporting moderately complex systems and troubleshooting application issues. High level of experience with working with customers, gathering and analyzing requirements.


Skills and Knowledge: Substantial level of programming knowledge and ability, with languages such as C#, .NET, PHP, Oracle PL/SQL, or Java. Substantial web development knowledge concepts, including HTML, XML, JSON, Javascript, and MVC concepts. Considerable relational databases knowledge and ability to write and analyze SQL queries and reports, and ability to analyze table data structures. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to work with customer groups and users of varying degrees of technical ability and understanding. Ability to manage work tasks using Atlassian JIRA tickets and follow through to completion. Effective time management skills. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Troubleshooting skills to independently learn of, analyze, track, and resolve issues. Ability to implement departmental and critical third-party applications, analyzing installation and configuration documentation, to successfully install and take on support for an application.


Preferred Qualifications: High level of experience supporting or working with higher education and University of Alabama administrative applications and tools, such as WordPress, Ellucian Banner, Tableau, and Power BI. Base knowledge of managing Windows Server applications, including IIS management and configuration and a base knowledge of Linux commands.
