Position Overview

The Systems Security Engineer is responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, and supporting security technology and methodology. Responsibilities will include anti-virus management, data encryption management, providing insights to endpoint security issues, and other security related issues in relation to enterprise applications, databases and KU’s web presence. This will include performing work with other members of IT Enterprise Workstation Technology, IT Enterprise Systems, IT Enterprise Platforms, IT Systems Development, IT Architecture, IT Applications, IT Database administrators and the IT Security Office. This position will report to the Associate Director overseeing application administration and database administration.


Job Description

50% - Act as IT security subject matter expert for IT Enterprise Applications, IT Database administrators and IT Systems Development. Liaise with the IT Security Office along with the Associate Director overseeing application administration and database administration to provide guidance, insight, and prioritization of IT security initiatives. Identify, develop, and document mitigations for vulnerable systems and software supported by KU IT.

15% - In collaboration with the IT Security Office, develop, document, and maintain system security standards for KU IT supported applications, databases, and websites.

15% - Administer, design and support security applications including antivirus/antimalware, data encryption, vulnerability scanning tools and other database, application, and web tools to help mitigate security risk, including database inventory management, ensuring database versioning is kept up to date, applications are appropriately inventoried and quality assurance best practices are followed.

10% - Stay abreast of current IT security threats, risks, and trends that impact KU IT supported applications, databases, and websites.

5% - Act as point of contact for IT security incidents involving KU IT supported applications, servers, and databases.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

  • This position shares in responsibility for information security by following all applicable security policies and procedures.
  • This position is authorized to use elevated privilege accounts in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to issue password resets in accordance with established procedure in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to handle sensitive or confidential data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to provision and deprovision user accounts and access in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to manage, provision, and deprovision IT assets in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.

Required Qualifications

  • Meet one of the following educational and experience requirements:
    • High school diploma or GED and five years of relevant experience OR Associate Degree and three years relevant professional experience OR bachelor’s degree and one year of relevant experience
  • At least 4 years of work experience in technology review to ensure they meet the business needs as well as with security standards.
  • Minimum of 2 years providing technical documentation.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education environment.
  • Experience with KU IT systems, policies, and procedures
  • At least 2 years quality assurance design and implementation for web and applications.
  • Experience with analyzing / proof reading web code (ie HTML, XML, PHP etc).
  • Previous database administration experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, instructional, and leadership skills in an environment of technological growth and development based on work history.
  • Experience in Idera or other database management technology and inventorying.
