Description of Work Unit
The Colorado State Forest Service is an agency of Colorado State University, Colorado’s land grant institution of higher education, and is housed, organizationally, in the Warner College of Natural Resources. The CSFS has 19 field offices throughout the state, with a State Office located in Fort Collins on one of the foothills campuses of CSU.
The purpose of the Administrative Division is to provide leadership and direction in service, outreach, and administration that directly contributes to achieving the agency’s mission of “the stewardship of Colorado’s diverse forest environments for the benefit of present and future generations”. The CSFS Administrative Division specifically coordinates the technological infrastructure for a staff of approximately115 people across the State of Colorado, the division acts as strategic advisor to agency leadership for both human resources and equal opportunity policies and the financial department coordinates the budgets and financial processes across the state for all field offices. The work unit consists of key leadership positions that provide direction to achieve the vision and mission of the CSFS.
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the IT Client Service Manager, the IT Specialist will support the technological infrastructure for a staff of approximately 130 people across the State of Colorado. The IT Specialist is expected to determine the appropriate technical resources necessary to implement priority projects, create guidelines/strategies for supporting critical departmental computing services, and define, document, and administer policies, procedures, and best practices for help desk programs and services. This position may also supervise student/non-student hourly employees.
Additionally, this position will regularly participate in Academic Computing and Networking Services (ACNS) trainings and meetings, conduct research, and evaluate new and emerging technologies to effectively advise leadership on the impact of current and potential security systems, operating systems, and best practices. The position must be able to analyze and implement complex and diverse computing environments, ensuring consistency with CSU/CSFS policies, standards, and best practices. This position will provide direction to the agency on purchases and maintenance for desktops, laptops, printers, mobile devices, tablets, and thin clients; keep up-to-date and accurate inventory; and deploy hardware packages, including PC and Apple systems, mobile devices, and auxiliary devices. Additionally, this position will work with the State Office accounting team when making purchases to ensure adherence to procurement policies and procedures.
The IT Specialist will provide consultation, interpretation, and direction on all end-user applications. This person will provide training for IT support/knowledge to offices throughout the state using various forums, such as webinars, hands-on technology, and video-conferencing. In addition, this position will direct the documentation of and distribution of new program and processes protocols. The IT Specialist must understand and comply with strict security regulations, confidentiality policies, and requirements of agency staff. This position is expected to develop an understanding of office and field IT usage, and provide timely service and support to all CSFS work units across the state.
Required Job Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Active Directory
  • Experience providing computer support in an enterprise environment
  • Experience providing printer support in a networked environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with constituents representing wide variability in technological understanding
  • The position requires bending and lifting equipment weighing up to 25 pounds when working on installs.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States before the employment start date; Colorado State Forest Service will not sponsor a visa for this position.
  • Successful applicants must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or related field.
  • Professional experience in moderate to large organizations providing technology support best practices.
  • Knowledge of information technology/computer systems management training and application.
  • Experience providing remote technical assistance using remote desktop, videoconferencing, screen sharing, email, and phone conversations as necessary
  • Familiar with cloud-based technology.
  • Experience and working knowledge of Microsoft Windows server and client applications, networking concepts, Office 365, PDAs, wireless computing, firewalls and other security tools,
  • Experience supporting ArcGIS, FVS, and other GIS applications
  • Experience using enterprise desktop imaging solutions, including custom operating system images and complex combinations of software packages.
  • Relevant knowledge and familiarity with Apple IOS, MacOS, and/or virtual machines (such as VMWare or Parallels) functioning within a Windows Domain environment.
  • Experience supporting, troubleshooting, and providing recommendations regarding mobile devices.
  • Experience with remote updates to systems in the Microsoft and/or Apple environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills with a demonstrated ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues through data collection, research, and troubleshooting.

  • Provide troubleshooting and applies professional knowledge, emerging industry standards, unit requirements & peer review to identify the optimum approach to a given problem with applications, processes and integrations
  • Document technical processes, procedures and code, analyzing and evaluating key trends to formulate conclusions to provide summary analysis to end user and provide training as needed
  • Proactively identify and confirm inaccuracies by amending processes providing technical consultation and recommendations to solve complex business issues; works with team members to optimally present and confirm effective analysis approach for stakeholders
  • Provide hands-on professional support for all CSFS field offices and the State Office to determine hardware, software and system functional requirements
  • Provide ongoing network and computing support in the current operating environment by analyzing, designing and instituting procedures resolving hardware and software issues at both the server and client level.
  • Maintain and upgrade when necessary Windows and Mac operating systems, primary software packages such as Microsoft Office and end-user mobile devices, performing remote updates to the systems.
  • Evaluate new and emerging technologies identifying, assessing, and advocating opportunities to optimize and enhance existing processes to effectively advise leadership on the direction CSFS should proceed with our operating systems.
  • Research technical information to plan, direct and manage high priority projects creating agency consistency.
  • Provide technical assistance direction and feedback support for incoming queries and issues related to computer systems, software, and hardware; including follow-up communication with customers to ensure the issue has been resolved
  • Track and maintain inventory of all computer related equipment, and software licenses
  • Design and provide accurate and comprehensive written supporting documentation and training for standard CSFS applications
  • Support advanced software functionality and application documentation and testing processes, and sample sets, to design training for end users
