IT Systems Administrator (Open Rank)

The College of Engineering, Design and Computing (CEDC) IT Department is instrumental in enabling the College to lead the way in engineering and technology education. The CEDC IT Department works to advance the strategic priorities of the college by providing innovative technology solutions and services to CEDC faculty, staff, and students.

The IT Systems Administrator manages, maintains, and improves upon the IT infrastructure for the college. They also act as the technical point of escalation for the CEDC Support Desk, assisting the team with the most complex technical issues that arise. This position acts as the subject matter expert for the IT infrastructure and IT services that the CEDC IT Department provides, and as such brings a breadth of knowledge to the team to understand the CEDC technological ecosystem and how different systems integrate with one another to provide services. These services include technical support, interfacing students with engineering software applications, internal consulting services, and more. This position will regularly interface with our IT Support Desk student employees, will assist in training new student technical assistants, and may fit into a mentor role for student workers.

Supervision Received

This position reports directly to the IT Services Manager (Position #00680786) and consults with the IT Director (Position #00783302).

Supervision Exercised

This position does not directly supervise any employees but may act as a mentor to student technical assistants.

Professional Staff
Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

Intermediate Level
At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed under the guidance and direction of other professionals.

Senior Professional Level
At the Senior level, work is performed fully independently.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure

  • Server administration, including implementation and installation, virtualization, file system configuration, hardware maintenance, storage management, software licensing, regular system updates, securing and hardening, and proactive monitoring and maintenance
  • Provide support for small-sized High Performance Computing (HPC) environments
  • Administer a heavily mixed computing environment, including Windows, Mac, and multiple flavors of Linux in highly customized use cases
  • Ensure high availability and acceptable levels of performance for server and network resources
  • Manage and maintain user accounts, groups, and access rights to network resources
  • Identify key opportunities to leverage cloud technology to increase availability, automate procedures, or improve upon self-service practices
  • Develop and implement cloud technology solutions that advance the strategic goals of CEDC
  • Document designs, configurations, topologies, and problem resolutions for server and network infrastructure

Operations Support Desk

  • Act as the primary point of escalation for the Support Desk’s providing of technical support for CEDC faculty/staff/students via a multitude of methods, including in-person, remote, phone, and live chat
  • Develop, maintain, update, and deploy cloned images for computing labs on a semiannual basis
  • Develop automation techniques for common support processes such as cloning, software installation, driver installation, print mapping, file share mapping, and more
  • Develop zero-touch deployment solutions for workstations, desktops, laptops, and mobile devices
  • Administer a mixed environment of Windows, Linux, and Mac systems, including hardware repairs and upgrades, operating system configuration, system software updates, software installation, procedure automation, and cloning

Services

  • Interface directly with students, faculty, and staff to identify needs, collect data, and identify solutions with a human-centered design approach
  • Manage the infrastructure, software, maintenance, and renewal of over 100 software licenses
  • In conjunction with the CEDC IT Services Manager, transform CEDC IT services into more nimble, modern approaches and mature CEDC’s IT service delivery processes in alignment with the CEDC IT Strategic Plan

Salary Range:

Intermediate Professional:
The posting range is established at $51,794 - $69,000

Senior Professional:
The posting range is established at $55,993 - $75,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

Intermediate Level

  • A bachelor’s degree  in computer science, management/computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, or a directly related, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • One (1) year of professional experience in information technology, computer science or systems administration

Senior Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management/computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, or a directly related, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Two (2) years of professional experience administering IT environments, IT infrastructure, or IT networks

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Note: Individuals will be hired at the level which they qualify, as determined by the hiring team in partnership with HR.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience providing technical support and maintenance of hardware, software, and peripherals in a complex enterprise environment
  • Demonstrated experience with enterprise technology management tools such as Active Directory, Group Policy Management, or Microsoft Endpoint Manager
  • Experience managing a virtual server environment leveraging virtualization technologies such as VMWare
  • Experience with large enterprise network environments, including VLANs, DNS, NAT, firewalls, and basic routing protocols
  • Proficient at scripting (i.e. Batch, Powershell, BASH, VBS)
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Azure, AWS, or GCP
  • Experience with task management and collaboration tools such as Zendesk, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom
  • Experience documenting and communicating complex designs using tools such as Microsoft Visio
  • Technical certificates a plus, such as:
    • CompTIA: A+, Network+, Security+, Server+, Linux+, Cloud+
    • Cisco: CCT, CCNA
    • Microsoft: MTA, MCSA, MCSE
    • VMWare: VCTA, VCP
