Job Summary: IT Leadership II performs high-level professional or technical IT activities for specialized, complex and/or functional areas requiring the expert knowledge and professional application of IT principles, practices and techniques in accordance with industry standards and university policy. Generally responsible for managing a large IT unit/department or multiple functions within a department supervising senior level and entry level professional IT personnel and other staff. May be responsible for establishing policy, procedures and standards that ensure the protection and security of IT functions.


Additional Department Summary: The Director, EDAS Portfolio & Departmental Application Support plans and directs all software development and maintenance within a given software suite or functional scope. Troubleshoots issues proactively and innovatively. Suggests new ideas or modifications. Maintains awareness of technology trends and best practices. Manages personnel and provides technical leadership, direction, and expertise. Manages, guides, and assists staff who design, develop, and support enterprise and highly complex software systems to support the administrative function of the University. Installs, customizes, supports, and creates integrations for vendor-supplied software systems. Analyzes and resolves problems arising with the use of software systems. Leads team and collaborates with specific departments, colleges, and customers around campus, supporting their needs, troubleshooting and resolving issues, and responding to their questions and concerns in a timely manner.

Specifically, this position will manage a team of technical resources that primarily support the four instances of Technolutions Slate around campus (Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, Capstone Center for Student Success, and Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education). These resources may have additional technical responsibilities outside of Slate. Assists the Executive Director, EDAS with managing the department's project portfolio. Manages and prioritizes projects within the EDAS project portfolio. Sets project schedules and resources.

This position may be eligible for remote hybrid work.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional IT experience; OR Master's degree or higher and five (5) years of progressively responsible professional IT experience. Knowledge of advanced programming, networking, system skills, or security technology. Advanced knowledge of project management methods and applications. Supervision of people or financial resources. May require advanced level training or certification.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Five (5) years of IT experience, such as development and maintenance of software applications, relational database management systems, computer programming, web development, system administration, or project management. High level of experience with working with customers, gathering and analyzing requirements.


Skills and Knowledge: Aptitude for solving problems. Self-motivated and resourceful. Ability to find ingenious solutions. Ability to manage highly complex assignments and systems. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to work with customer groups and users of varying degrees of technical ability and understanding. Ability to manage, lead, and support a team of technical staff who support a wide range of processes, applications, and departments. Ability to understand team members’ strengths and weaknesses and leverage all available resources to work through issues and assist in finding and implementing solutions and software. Ability to manage a diverse portfolio of applications, processes, and projects, and manage work tasks using Atlassian JIRA tickets and follow through to completion. Effective time management skills. Ability to work on and manage multiple projects simultaneously.


Preferred Qualifications: Expert level experience with University of Alabama administrative applications and tools, such as the Atlassian suite, Technolutions Slate, and Ellucian Banner. Familiarity with higher education business processes and UA culture, departments, and processes.
